is posting this okay? probably not WHO CARES LETS DO THIS
Actually this one’s gonna be kinda hard for me to talk about considering the amount of Umineko no Naku Koro ni I’ve read (which this page is from) (which is pretty much none). Considering the glacial pace of the scanlations and the fact that reading a Ryukishi07 work in the original, sound novel form is generally about as fun as watching paint dry except with poorly drawn anime characters laid over it I just haven’t gotten into it very much.
Still, from what I can tell Umineko is like distilled Higurashi. It’s all about the mystery. The premise is that a shitload of people get killed on an island, and Battler, a guy who may appear to be Phoenix Wright at first glance BUT DEFINITELY IS NOT, NO WAY, has to argue that a bunch of incredibly illogical killings are somehow possible so he can disprove the existence of witches. He’s arguing this with a witch. He also dies in every arc. Leaving that aside the premise is okay, but the big problem is that it ends up losing the essence of a mystery and becoming a math problem. If a legitimate solution to one of the puzzles posed by the mystery is the infamous “one guy kills the first guy, locks the room, and expires leading to a giant circle of seemingly impossible closed room mysteries” it’s not even fun anymore, it’s just semantics.
The manga falls into even more incoherence in the second half, where the world is suddenly dictated by logic and there’s a guy with no gender because nobody knows his gender and he’s a baby only he’s not and i think it links into higurashi somehow? then they start talking about some rules of detective stories being actual laws and they lose me. My point being that Umineko experiences just as bad if not worse deterioration in the second half than its predecessor, without even having as interesting a first half as Higurashi did.
of course, i could be wrong but they basically lost me when the dude used his lightsaber hand to kill a goat dude
